Cariño to Wendy Shipley, Volunteer Coordinator, and Trace Burns, Volunteer Network Assistant!
In honor of Random Acts of Kindness Week, we wanted to share this Cariño from Alyssa Montoya of the Las Cruces Public Schools Bridge Program, which helps young adults with unique abilities prepare for the workforce.
Alyssa and her students have been volunteering at our Senior Centers—Benavidez, East Side, and Munson, serving lunch and making connections with our senior community. She wanted to express her sincere thanks to the City of Las Cruces Volunteer Network for providing this incredible opportunity:
"We are so grateful for the opportunities you have given us. Our students love going to work and look forward to it each and every day."
Thank you to Alyssa, the LCPS Bridge Program, and the Volunteer Network for providing this opportunity and positively impacting our community.

One more round of applause for the next deserving Standing Ovation Award winner.....Kimberly Gomez, Counselor with the Virtual Learning Academy.
This award is extra special because it comes from a former student whose life was forever changed by the unwavering support, kindness, and encouragement of their school counselor. In their nomination, they shared that during some of their toughest times, this counselor was their safe place—a constant source of reassurance and guidance. Even now, though they have moved on to a different school, they still seek out her wisdom and comfort because of the trust and care she has built. It is a testament to the incredible difference one person can make—not just in the moment, but for a lifetime. This counselor shows us that support doesn’t end when a student leaves a school, and that a listening ear and a compassionate heart can change a life.
WOW! Thank you for making such an impact, Kimberly! -LCPS Foundation

Every year about 350,000 out of hospital cardiac arrests occur, (That's more than HALF the entire population of Wyoming!) meaning that a bystander would need to step in and help! You and your family can learn hands only CPR together through your Kids Heart Challenge Page!
If you haven't' yet, sign up HERE and check it out to be a lifesaver, and share what you learned with friends and family!

Parents Receive New School Zone Communication
Letters sent home Monday with exemption criteria, transfer process
On Monday, Jan. 27, students in Las Cruces Public Schools will take home letters from the district indicating their updated zoned school for the upcoming 2025-2026 school year. Not every student will be impacted by the redistricting changes, which were voted on by the LCPS Board of Education on Dec. 17, 2024.
The letters, which are unique to each student, will indicate which school the student will be automatically enrolled in for the next school year. Some students will automatically qualify for an exemption from the new school zones based on certain criteria approved by the LCPS Board of Education, including:
·Students who will be in 5th grade in Fall 2025.
·Students who will be in 8th grade in Fall 2025.
·Students who will be in 11th or 12th grade in Fall 2025.
·Students on a 2024-25 competition roster for athletics, activities, or fine arts.
·Students currently enrolled at the same school as a sibling who meet one of the above criteria.
·Students currently enrolled in a magnet program at their current school.
·Students currently enrolled in a dual language program not available at their zoned school. (Dual Language programs are available at: Alameda, Booker T. Washington, Central, Cesar Chavez, Columbia, Conlee, Doña Ana, E. Picacho, Fairacres (K), Hermosa Heights, Highland, Jornada, Loma Heights, MacArthur, Sonoma, Sunrise, Tombaugh, Valley View, Mesa, Zia, Las Cruces)
·Students attending a school of choice (e.g., Arrowhead Park, Mesilla Valley Leadership Academy, Rio Grande Prep).
·Students enrolled in specialized special education satellite classrooms or programs will be contacted individually regarding their school assignments for next year.
Parents may complete a transfer request form if their child(ren) meets one or more of the exemptions. The form is available using this link and the deadline to submit a transfer request is Friday, Feb. 7, 2025, at 5 p.m. One form request should be submitted for each student.
The LCPS Board of Education also approved a revised transfer policy to support balanced enrollment. Transfer approvals will be limited, and transportation will not be provided. Parents who wish to apply for a transfer out of their zoned school can use this link to start the process. The deadline to apply for a transfer is Friday, Feb. 7, 2025, at 5 p.m.
The district has set up a hotline for parents who have questions. That hotline is available Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at (575) 525-7121. Questions can also be emailed to tlc@lcps.net. Additional information on the redistricting process, which launched in August 2024, can be found here.

Starting next school year, the LCPS bell schedule will accommodate for new scientific research that shows later school times correlate with more sleep, better academic performance, mental and physical health benefits and more efficient bus routes.
There will be no change for elementary bell schedules, but middle school will start 20 minutes later (the first bell is now at 9:15 a.m.) and high school will start 10 minutes later (8:35 a.m.).
Questions? Please contact your school principal.
